About the Intergenerational Book Club

Once a month on a Tuesday evening, volunteers from Asbury Methodist Village and Link Generations meet with high school students at the Gaithersburg Public Library from 6:30–7:30 PM to share their love of books. In this welcoming space, teens and older adults read together, exchange perspectives, and build friendships across generations.

How it works

Each cycle features a diverse selection of books chosen

to spark meaningful conversations and reflect a variety of voices and perspectives. Participants read assigned chapters between sessions

Core Components

  • Shared Reading: High school students and older adults read selected books that reflect diverse voices and perspectives.

  • Guided Dialogue: Monthly sessions include small-group conversations and whole-group reflections to deepen understanding.

  • Intergenerational Connection: Participants share personal experiences, building empathy and mutual respect across generations.

  • Community Partnership: Delivered in collaboration with Gaithersburg Library, Asbury Methodist Village, and Link Generations.

Outcomes

  • Students strengthen discussion skills, critical thinking, and literary appreciation.

  • Older adults and students build meaningful intergenerational friendships.

  • Participants broaden their perspectives by engaging with diverse stories and viewpoints.

  • The program nurtures empathy, understanding, and a stronger sense of community through the joy of reading.
